Tunnel site 1
On April, 6 2011 they finished excavation for full cross section of a road tunnel which is a part of the Tunnel site №1 in the combined traffic and rail road Adler – Alpika Servis. They started excavation in May 2009 by means of a road header and drill and blast. Length of the tunnel is 2296 m. Construction is being carried out by ZAO «US UGSK».
Tunnel site 3
On March,1 2011 they accomplish breakethrough of the service tunnel №2 on Tunnel site 3. Tunnel site №3 is the longest and the most complicated in the combined traffic and rail road Adler – Alpika Servis. The service tunnel was bored by a TBM Seli-Lovat RM 243DS 6,2 m in diameter. Totally they bored 3208,6 m.
Tunnel System 5
February 9, 2011 - excavation of the railway tunnel belonging to the Tunnel System 5 which is part of the combined (rail and traffic) road running from the city of Adler to the mountain resort Alpika-Servis was completed. The tunnel was excavated using the TBM Herrenknecht EPB-10690 (diameter - 10,69 m). The ceremonial breakthrough event was attended by representatives of the following companies and organizations: Transport Ministry of Russia, JSC Russian Railways, State Corporation “Olympstroy”, International Olympic Committee, International and Russian Tunneling Associations, as well as participants in the International Conference held in Sochi at that time and participants in the Sochi project construction.
Conference for Tunnel Builders
February 8 -10, the first international conference «Russian Experience and Development of Innovative Technologies for the Construction of Tunnel Projects in Sochi» took place in Sochi. The Conference was organized by the Russian and International Tunneling Associations with the assistance of JSC Russian Railways, JSC STROY-TREST and JSC Bamtonnelstroy. The Conference was devoted to advanced construction technologies, materials, and equipment specially developed, designed and manufactured for the implementation of the complex Olympic tunnel construction projects. More than 200 participants from Russia, Canada, Germany, Austria, France, Japan, Denmark, the USA, Italy and other countries took part in the Conference.
Tunnel System 1
December 10, 2010 - Ceremonial breakthrough of the traffic and railway tunnels belonging to the Tunnel System 1 which is part of the combined (traffic and rail) road running from the city of Adler to the mountain resort Alpika - Servis took place. These tunnels were broken through by drill and blast. The button for the last blast was pushed by the RF Vice President Dmitry Kozak. Among the participants were also - Chairman of the IOC Coordination
Commission for the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics Jean-Claude Killy, President of JSC Russian Railways Vladimir Yakunin, President of the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee Dmitry Chernyshenko, Mayor of Sochi Anatoly Pakhomov and other officials.
This Tunnel System consists of the traffic, railway and service tunnels. The traffic tunnel length is 2,3 km. The railway tunnel length is 2,5 km. Both tunnels were excavated by conventional method from either portal.
Railway Tunnel 4 Breakthrough
November 2, excavation of the railway tunnel 4 upper bench (calotte) was completed. It is the fourth underground heading excavated under the Sochi Olympics preparation program. This single- track tunnel of 449 m is part of the combined (traffic and railway) road running from the city of Adler to the mountain resort Alpika-Servis. The tunnel excavation started in November 2009 and was carried out using roadheaders and drill and blast.
Tunnel System 6
November 2, 2010 – excavation of the upper bench of the railway tunnel 6 which is part of the combined (traffic and railway) road running from the city of Adler to the mountain resort Alpika-Servis was completed. This double-track tunnel will be located between two new railway stations – Roza Khutor and Alpika – Servis. 403 meters of the tunnel were excavated. At present, the lower bench is being mined and permanent lining is being assembled. The excavation is planned to be completed at the end of the 1st quarter of 2011. The tunnel construction is being carried out by BTS-Gidrostroy Ltd using roadheaders and drill and blast.
Tunnel System 3
October 29 – Tunnel Division 12 Ltd started the service tunnel excavation using the TBM Lovat RME 232SE (diameter 5,9 m) from the north portal. 2630 meters are to be excavated. Tunnel Division 18 Ltd is excavating the service tunnel section from the south portal using the TBM Seli-Lovat RM 243DS (diameter 6,2 m). By the end of October 1385 meters had been excavated.
Special Issue of METRO AND TUNNELS Magazine
On the occasion of the 35 th Anniversary of Bamtonnelstroy, Metro and Tunnels magazine published a special issue 4 devoted to Bamtonnelstroy - its history, current activities and plans for the future. Special attention was focused on Bamtonnelstroy’s participation in construction of the Olympic projects in Sochi. Companies that have been our partners, colleagues and friends for 35 years wrote their congratulations and articles about our joint participation in various projects. Third Excavated Tunnel. Sochi 2014
July 9, 2010 – excavation of the railway tunnel 2 which is part of the combined (railway and traffic) road running from the city of Adler to the mountain resort Alpika - Servis was completed. The tunnel length is 122 meters. It was excavated from the north portal using mining excavators and drill and blast. The excavation was performed by UMGKR Ltd.
Robbins TBM started the Krolsky service tunnel excavation
June 1st – the ceremonial start-up of the Krolsky service tunnel excavation by means of the Robbins DS1413-301 TBM took place. The Krolsky railway tunnel excavation was completed in May 2008. It’s length is 2233,8 m. The service tunnel length is planned to be 2257,62 running meters. The service tunnel excavation is being performed by Tunnel Division 18 Ltd.
Second Excavated Tunnel. Sochi 2014
June 4, 2010 – excavation of the service tunnel which is part of the Tunnel System 5 located along the combined (railway and traffic) road running from the city of Adler to the mountain resort Alpika - Servis was completed. The service tunnel length is 2848 meters, its inner diameter is 3,7 meters. The tunnel was bored by means of the TBM Lovat RME 167SE. The excavation was performed by Tunnel Division 18 Ltd.
First Excavated Tunnel. Sochi 2014
May, 28 – on the north portal jobsite of the Tunnel System 1 the ceremonial event devoted to the service tunnel drive completion took place. Construction of all the tunnels located along the combined road running from Adler to the mountain resort Alpika Servis started with the excavation of this very tunnel in May last year. The President of JSC Russian Railways Mr. Vladimir Yakunin and the Vice President of JSC Russian Railways Mr. Oleg Tony were present at such a significant event.
Visit by IOC Experts
6-9 April, 2010 – the 8 th visit by the International Olympic Committee experts to all the tunnel construction sites located along the combined road running from the city of Adler to the mountain resort Alpika – Servis took place. The purpose of their visit was to see the current status of the tunnel construction, to check its speed and quality. Special attention was paid to the construction of the most complicated Tunnel Systems 1, 3 and 5.
Herrenknecht 10690 – Excavation Beginning
April 5, 2010 – the ceremonial start - up of the TBM Herrenknecht 10690 took place at the south portal jobsite of the Tunnel System 5, which is part of the combined road running from the city of Adler to the mountain resort Alpika-Servis. This 10,6 meter diameter TBM will bore the railway tunnel of 2872,7 meters. A total of 6 TBMs will be used for construction of the tunnels along this combined road - 3 TBMs for construction of the service tunnels and 3 TBMs for construction of the main tunnels.
Railway Tunnel 2, Sochi
In the middle of March 2010, excavation of the railway tunnel 2 which is part of the combined (traffic and railway) road running from the city of Adler to the mountain resort Alpika-Servis started. Being 121 meters long this tunnel is the shortest tunnel on this road, however, geological conditions are expected to be unfavourable. The excavation is being performed by UMGKR Ltd using roadheaders and drill and blast.
Rostekhnadzor visited the Olympic construction sites
February 17, 2010 the Central Department of Rostekhnadzor (the Russian Federal Service for Ecological, Technical and Atomic Supervision) inspected the projects of the Olympic transport infrastructure including the combined (rail and traffic) road from Adler to the mountain resort Alpika-Servis. The Tunnel Systems # 1, 3 and 5 were among the visited sites. The inspection was performed under the direction of the Chief Nikolay Kutin. As a result of the inspection, no major violations with respect to the construction were found.
This year JSC Bamtonnelstroy celebrates its 35-Year Anniversary!
For 35 five years the Company has been constructing railway, traffic and metro tunnels all over the Russian Federation from the Pacific Ocean to the Black Sea coast. All the previous years have marked a period of coping with difficulties, achieving high results, consolidating the Company’s position in the Russian construction market as well as the Company’s dynamic development.

Kuznetsovsky railway tunnel
The excavation of the new Kuznetsovsky railway tunnel has been already begun in the Komsomolsk-na-Amure – Sovetskaya Gavan section. The building was started in January 2009 with the excavation of the service tunnel with shield method using TBM Robbins DS1413-301. The new tunnel length is 3890 m. It will be one-way tunnel with concrete precast lining.
The excavation of the tunnel is performed by shield method either, using Lovat RME 375SE with the diameter of 9,5 m from the eastern portal side.
On the 11th of November the Council of the self-regulating organization Non-commercial partnership «MOD «SOYUZDORSTROY» decided to issue JSC «Bamtonnelstroy» a competency certificate for building, reconstructing and overhauling the capital construction projects, which can effect the operational safety.
